The best harnesses for small dogs

With a small dog, putting on a harness can turn into a chase down the hallway, with you on your knees and them just out of reach. Even once you've caught them, a lot of harnesses are cut for bigger dogs, so the straps slide off a shoulder or sag under the chest. All you were asking for in the first place was a harness that hugs a little frame without slipping.

What to look for in a harness for a small dog

On a small dog, a size that's slightly off can slide off a shoulder or rub under a front leg. Check any harness for these four things before you buy.

  1. A smallest size that's really small

Many harnesses start at a size that's still too big for a toy breed. Measure around your dog's ribcage, then look for a smallest size whose chest range includes that number.

  2. A ring at the front

When the leash clips at the chest, a small dog who lunges gets turned back toward you, not pulled up by the throat. Check that the chest strap has its own leash ring.

  3. Neck and chest sizes on the chart

Small dogs come in very different shapes, from slim Chihuahuas to thick-necked pugs. A chart that gives a neck range for each size helps you avoid a neck loop that gapes or pinches.

  4. A harness your dog will let you put on

Some dogs don't mind a harness going over their head, and some duck every time. If yours ducks, look for a step-in harness, where your dog walks into it with their front paws.

Classic Fit No Pull Dog Harness

rabbitgoo

Some little dogs pull like a sled team one day and dawdle the next. The rabbitgoo has a front ring and a back ring for both kinds of walk, and its chart sizes the neck as well as the chest.

Megan's take

This rabbitgoo vest has a ring on the chest and another on the back, and between them they cover most small dogs' walks. On a day your dog lunges at every bird, clip the leash to the front ring, and a pull swings them gently around toward you. On a calm day, move the leash to the back ring.

A sturdy handle on the back lets you lift your dog over a puddle or hold them still at a busy road. It has four places to adjust and two quick-release buckles on the sides. Reflective strips run around it for walks after dark.

Its size chart gives a neck range and a chest range for every size, so check both numbers before you order. My pug, Pickle, has a neck nearly as thick as his chest, and dogs built like him are why that second number matters. For a toy breed with a very small chest, the Ruffwear starts smaller.

Pick it if

  • You want one harness for every walk
  • Your dog pulls some days and not others
  • You'd like a handle to grab

Skip it if

  • Your dog's chest is tiny, toy-breed size

Hi & Light Lightweight Dog Harness

Ruffwear

A Yorkie in a harness cut for a beagle looks like a kid in their dad's coat. The Hi & Light's XXX-Small starts at a 9 inch chest, so the straps sit on a tiny dog instead of sliding around them.

Megan's take

The Hi & Light is a slim harness built to keep bulk down, so a dog who weighs next to nothing isn't hauling a heavy vest around. Its XXX-Small starts at a 9 inch chest, lower than the first size of either other pick.

On easy walks the leash goes on a metal ring at the back, and for a puller there's a webbing loop at the chest. A small pocket carries ID tags or a few poop bags, and the lining resists fur and debris. It has four places to adjust and reflective trim. To wash it, close the buckles, machine wash it cold on a gentle setting using a mild soap, then hang it up.

The chart sizes by chest alone, with no neck range, so if your dog's neck is thick for their chest, the rabbitgoo's chart tells you more. For a little dog above toy size, we'd still start with the rabbitgoo, which has a handle and a sturdier vest.

Pick it if

  • Your dog's chest measures less than 11.8 in
  • You want a slim, low-bulk harness

Skip it if

  • You want to check a neck size before you order

Step-in Air Dog Vest Harness

Voyager

Some small dogs back away the moment a harness comes near their ears. With the Voyager, your dog steps in with their front paws, so there's no tug-of-war over their head.

Megan's take

Ears are the sore point for a lot of small dogs, and this Voyager vest never goes near them. You lay it on the floor, your dog steps in with their front paws, and you fasten it on. That takes most of the fight out of getting ready for a walk.

It's a soft vest made of breathable mesh, so it's a good fit for warm days. The sizes run from XXX-Small to XL, and each one covers only one to two and a half inches of chest. So measure with care, because each size of the other two picks covers a wider chest range.

The Voyager is made for small pets, and its neckline is shaped to stop a dog wriggling out. For a very tiny dog, the Ruffwear's smallest size starts lower.

Pick it if

  • Your dog ducks or backs away from a harness
  • You want a light mesh vest for warm days

Skip it if

  • Your dog is between sizes

Our verdict

Buy the rabbitgoo: a front ring for pullers, a back ring for calm days, and a chart that sizes the neck too. Toy breeds suit the Ruffwear, and dogs who duck suit the Voyager.

Questions people ask

Is a harness better than a collar for a small dog? It’s the safer choice for a dog with a windpipe problem. Cornell’s vet school says tracheal collapse, a disease of the windpipe, is common in small breeds like Yorkies. Its main sign is a dry cough that won’t go away. A dog with that cough should see a vet first. For dogs with the disease, Cornell lists a switch from a collar to a harness as one change to make at home.

Where does the tape go when I measure? Wrap a soft tape measure around your dog’s ribs where they’re widest. Measure the neck too if the chart asks for it. Our measuring guide shows where the tape goes. Then the Fit Finder turns your numbers into a size in the Ruffwear’s chart.

How tight should a small dog’s harness be? It should sit snug, so your dog can’t back out of it, but it should never pinch. Our guide to fitting a harness walks you through checking each strap in turn.
