Big dogs have a way of finding the end of a size chart. You measure that broad ribcage, run your finger down the list, and even the biggest size won't close around it. Then there's the walk itself, where one lunge from a dog that size can pull you off balance. A harness that closes properly, with a ring at the chest for the leash, swings that lunge around so your dog ends up facing you.

A big dog puts more weight behind every pull and more strain on every strap. Run these four checks on any harness before you buy one.
Many size charts end before they reach a giant breed's chest size. Wrap a tape around your dog's ribcage at its fullest point, then check that the largest size on the chart goes past your number.
A heavy dog on a back clip can lean their whole weight into the leash. With the leash at the chest, a pull turns them toward you, so check the front for a ring or loop.
Big dogs come in many shapes, from deep and narrow to broad and barrel-chested. Adjusters on the neck and ribcage straps let you set each one, so count them on the listing before you buy.
Every stride pushes a big dog's straps into the chest and the skin behind the front legs. On long walks, look for foam padding or a soft lining under the straps.

A big dog can lunge hard enough to pull you off balance before you've braced. On the rabbitgoo's chest ring, that lunge swings them around to face you, and the handle on top lets you keep them close.
Clip the leash to the chest ring on this rabbitgoo vest, and a big dog's lunge tugs them gently sideways. They end up facing you instead of the squirrel. Once they're walking calmly, move the leash to the ring between the shoulders for an easy stroll.
A heavy-duty handle sits on the back, so you can hold a big dog close at a busy crossing or help them into the car. Four adjusters set the fit, and it clips shut with a buckle on each side. Reflective strips circle the whole vest. After a muddy walk, zip it into a laundry bag and put it through a gentle machine cycle.
The biggest size, the XL, fits up to a 38 inch chest. Its chart sizes the neck as well, so take both measurements before you order. Past 38 inches, the Front Range's L/XL goes up to 42, and the Easy Walk's X-Large reaches 49.

Once your tape measure runs past the end of most charts, a giant dog has few harnesses left to choose from. The Easy Walk's X-Large keeps going to a 49 inch chest, so there's a size made for a dog that big.
The Easy Walk's X-Large is the size the other two can't match. It covers a chest of 32 to 49 inches, with the tape wrapped around the ribcage at its fullest point. It has four adjusters, so each strap can be set to your dog's build.
Your leash goes on a loop at the chest, called a martingale. Each time your dog lunges, the loop tightens and presses gently on the shoulders, which slows them and helps you get their attention back. The straps snap shut at the shoulder and under the belly. That belly strap comes in its own color, so you can see which way up the harness goes.
With less coverage than many harnesses, the Easy Walk stays light and cool on a heavy-coated dog in July. It has only the one leash point, at the chest. If your dog's chest is 42 inches or less, the rabbitgoo or the Front Range gives you a ring on the back as well.
Best for long days outdoors
Ruffwear
Six hours on a trail gives every strap plenty of time to rub. The Front Range has foam under its shell, so a big dog stays comfortable on the long walk back to the car.
Hours into a hike, the foam padding under this Ruffwear's outer shell is what keeps the straps comfortable on a big dog. There are two leash points: an aluminum V-ring on the back for easy walking, and a strong webbing loop on the chest to steer a puller.
Reflective trim shows up in car headlights, and a small loop holds a clip-on light for walks before sunrise. Tags tuck into a little pocket, so they don't jingle the whole way around the trail. Four adjusters set the fit. Washing takes more work: wash it by hand in mild soap, then leave it to air dry.
The biggest size, the L/XL, fits a ribcage of 32 to 42 inches, and if you're between two sizes, take the larger one. Its top size is bigger than the rabbitgoo's. A broad dog who has outgrown the rabbitgoo's XL may still have a size here. For a chest over 42 inches, the Easy Walk comes in a bigger size.

Our verdict
Buy the rabbitgoo for most large dogs: it has rings front and back and a handle for the curb. A giant breed needs the Easy Walk, and long days outside suit the Front Range.
Where should a big dog’s leash clip? At the chest, if your dog pulls. A back-clip harness lets a large dog pull you like a sled, says a humane society’s advice to a Great Dane owner. With the leash on a front clip, a pull guides your dog’s body back around toward you.
Is a tightening harness OK for a big dog? Use one with care. A 2025 review of collars, harnesses and head collars looked at dogs who pull. For those dogs, a front-clip harness with no tightening loop seemed to give the best balance of comfort and less pulling. The review said tightening harnesses should be used with caution. The Easy Walk’s chest loop tightens, so we recommend it only for a dog whose chest is over 42 inches.
How do I measure a giant dog for a harness? Use a soft tape at the fullest point of the ribcage. A helper with treats keeps a big dog still while you read the number.
