The best cat carriers for big cats

Getting a big cat to the vet can be a workout before you've even left the house. There's the hunt under the bed, then the lift, then a carrier that's too short. A tail or a back leg is still outside when you try to shut the door. None of that is your cat being difficult. They need room to get up and turn around, and that's more room than the carrier you've got was ever built to give.

What to look for in a carrier for a big cat

A big cat fills a carrier fast, so a few details matter more than usual. These four are worth checking on any carrier you look at.

  1. Room to stand up and turn around

Your cat should have space inside to get up, sit, lie flat and turn. Check the inside length, since the number in the product name can be the outside size.

  2. A top that opens

With an open top, you can lower in a cat who won't use the door, and your vet can reach them without tipping the carrier. Look for a top that unzips or lifts off.

  3. A floor that stays dry

A worried cat can have an accident in the car, and a big cat makes a big mess. Look for a raised floor or a moat, or a pad you can take out and wash.

  4. A way to hold it still in the car

A carrier should stay put when you brake, so look for seat belt loops or a handle made to strap down. If it has neither, put it on the floor.

Premium Cat & Dog Carrier (Large)

PetLuv

A big cat who has worked out what the carrier means will make themselves as wide as the door. The PetLuv's top and all three sides unzip, so you can lower your cat in through the top, and the vet can reach in without tipping them out.

Ryan's take

The PetLuv's open top helps at both ends of the trip. At home you can lower your cat in from above. At the vet, with the top and all three sides unzipped, the vet can reach your cat without tipping them out. AAHA lists a top that opens as one thing a good carrier needs, because it gives the vet easy access.

It's a soft bag on a light metal frame, rated for pets up to 45 pounds, and it weighs 7.5 pounds itself. The mesh windows roll up, and solid shades come down if your cat settles better in the dark. The zippers lock, there are loops for a car seat belt, and the 2-inch pillow comes out for the wash. Between vet trips, it folds flat.

The bag is 24 by 16 by 16 inches, and the chart doesn't say whether that's inside or outside. We treat it as outside, so the Fit Finder allows for the frame and fabric. That leaves room to turn for a cat up to 19 inches from nose to tail base. The chart gives no inside height, so you can't tell how much space your cat will have above their head. A cat longer than 19 inches from nose to tail base, up to 21.25 inches, needs the Ultra Vari.

Pick it if

  • Your cat is up to 19 in, nose to tail base
  • Your cat won't walk in through a door
  • You'd like a carrier that folds flat

Skip it if

  • Your cat is longer than 19 in, nose to tail base
  • You want inside measurements you can check

Best for extra-long cats

Traveler Ultra Vari Kennel (28-inch)

Petmate

Some big cats are long rather than heavy, and the PetLuv runs out of floor before they can turn around. The 28-inch Ultra Vari is 24.25 inches long inside, so a cat up to 21.25 inches from nose to tail base has space to turn.

Ryan's take

Length is where the Ultra Vari pulls ahead. Inside, the 28-inch size is 24.25 inches long and 19.5 inches tall. That leaves room to turn for a cat up to 21.25 inches from nose to tail base, more than the PetLuv allows. A cat who stands up to about 16.5 inches tall still has 3 inches of space above their head.

It's the plain plastic kennel you've probably seen at the vet, with metal vents down both sides. The door has a squeeze latch, which you pinch to open instead of pushing. A channel around the floor, called a moat, keeps your cat dry if there's an accident on the way.

All that room makes it heavy: it's 12.33 pounds empty, so with a big cat inside, you'll want both hands. It's rated for pets of 25 to 30 pounds, but for a long cat, length decides whether there's room to turn. There's only a front door, so for a cat who won't walk in, the PetLuv's open top is easier.

Pick it if

  • Your cat is longer than 19 in, nose to tail base
  • Your cat needs headroom to stand up
  • You drive to the vet and can lift with two hands

Skip it if

  • You carry your cat a long way on foot
  • Your cat is longer than 21.25 in, nose to tail base

Best for carrying on your own

All Purpose Vari Kennel (24-inch)

Petmate

When it's just you carrying a big cat from the parking lot to the vet's front desk, every pound of carrier counts. At about 5 pounds empty, the Vari weighs less than the other two, so most of what you lift is your cat.

Ryan's take

This is a lighter Petmate kennel than the Ultra Vari, here in the 24-inch size. At about 5 pounds empty, it's the lightest of the three to carry, and the top handle is also made for securing it in the car. The door has holes for zip ties, so you can fasten it shut for the drive. A channel around the floor, the same moat the Ultra Vari has, keeps your cat dry if there's an accident.

Inside, it's 21.5 inches long, 15 wide and 13.5 tall, and it's rated for pets of 10 to 20 pounds. That leaves room to turn for a cat up to 18.5 inches from nose to tail base. Height matters too: a cat who stands about 10.5 inches tall or less, measured to the highest point of their head, still has 3 inches of space above them.

It only opens at the front, so a cat who won't walk in is easier in the PetLuv, which also folds flat once you're home. A cat longer than 18.5 inches, taller than about 10.5 inches or over 20 pounds needs more room than this. If that cat is up to 21.25 inches long, the Ultra Vari has space to turn.

Pick it if

  • You carry your cat to the vet on your own
  • Your cat is up to 18.5 in long and about 10.5 in tall
  • Your cat weighs 20 lb or less

Skip it if

  • Your cat is longer than 18.5 in, taller than about 10.5 in, or over 20 lb
  • Your cat won't walk in through a door

Our verdict

Get the PetLuv for most big cats up to 19 inches long: it opens on top and is rated to 45 pounds. A cat up to 21.25 inches needs the Ultra Vari. The Vari is the lightest to carry, for a cat up to 18.5 inches long and about 10.5 inches tall.

Questions people ask

How do you measure a cat for a carrier? Run a soft tape from your cat’s nose to where the tail starts. Height and weight matter too, and our measuring guide walks through all three. The Fit Finder then adds turning room and compares your numbers with each carrier’s chart.

My cat hides as soon as the carrier comes out. What helps? I know this one well, because whenever a trip looks likely, my gray tabby, Fig, vanishes under the bed. AAHA’s advice on vet visits for cats is to leave the carrier out at home. That way it becomes part of the room, and seeing it doesn’t always mean a trip. Our guide to getting a cat into a carrier goes through it step by step.

How should I carry a heavy cat in a carrier? Use both hands, one on the handle and one underneath. AAHA’s tips for calmer vet visits say this keeps the carrier steady. Our Ultra Vari review covers what the heaviest of the three is like to carry.
